According to Metro, the Gunners are planning an £8 million bid for Celtic’s Dutch international defender Virgil van Dijk as Arsene Wenger looks to take pressure away from his threadbare defence that only comprises Per Mertesacker, Laurent Koscielny and Calum Chambers as centre back options.
Twenty-three-year-old van Dijk is extremely experienced for his age and the French tactician sent out scouts who were impressed after watching van Dijk play for the Hoops in their recent Europa League fixture against Dinamo Zagreb.
Arsenal fans are desperate to see defensive cover arrive after seeing Wenger and his side struggle so far this term, managing just two Premier League victories in seven games this season.
Punters in the tavern believe that if Wenger can strengthen and sort out his defensive line in January, it will give them a good chance of glory or at least finishing higher up in the table.
The Gunners of course significantly improved their attacking options with the additions of Danny Welbeck and Alexis Sanchez from Manchester United and Barcelona respectively.
Celtic’s centre half was linked with a move to the Premier League during the summer with Southampton and Sunderland billed as favourites for his signature but it looks as though he could now be the main man on the Gunners’ radar.
Arsenal fans. Would you take an £8 million chance on a defender who is effectively playing against second-rate opposition in the SPL each and every week? Let us know your thoughts below.
