Arsenal fans in the Football Transfer Tavern had long ago accepted that they would not be seeing Thomas Vermaelen at the Emirates Stadium next season.
But it now seems that Arsene Wenger has sourced the perfect replacement for the Belgian international with The Telegraph claiming they want Joel Veltman.
The Dutchman is currently playing in his native country for Amsterdam giants Ajax but Arsenal may face a fight for the defender with noisy neighbours Tottenham.
Spurs are still worried that they will lose Jan Vertonghen due to the fact they have yet again failed to qualify for the Champions League despite buying more than £100 million worth of new players in the summer.
The fact that Tottenham failed to qualify for Europe’s biggest competition will also make it difficult for them to lure class players to White Hart Lane so the fight to replace Vermaelen with Veltman may not be as hard as it seems.
Vermaelen himself joined from Ajax back in 2009 and was initially a huge success but a few long-term injuries and some under par performances have seen him fall behind Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker.
Veltman was handed his Netherlands international debut against the hipsters favourite club – Colombia – in November last year and he has continued to impress both sets of scouts.
What do you think Arsenal fans? Is Joel Veltman the man to replace Vermaelen? Let us know your thoughts below.
