Arsenal supporters in the Football Transfer Tavern are getting increasingly fed up with seeing reported transfer targets ending up at other clubs and unfortunately we have even more bad news for them from Sky Sports arriving in the tavern.
Sky Sports confirm that Brazilian international midfielder Bernard has signed for Ukrainian giants Shakhtar Donetsk in a £21.5 million deal from Atletico Mineiro.
The 20-year-old has agreed a five-year contract with the Donbass Arena club after snubbing interest from Arsenal while Tottenham and FC Porto were understood to be monitoring his progress.
A statement published on Shakhtar’s official website read: “Shakhtar Donetsk signed a five-year deal with Bernard. The transfer fee for the Brazilian midfielder, who previously played for Atlético Mineiro, is €25m.”
The left winger will act as a late replacement for fellow Brazilian Willian, who left he club for Anzhi Makhachkala in a high profile £30 million move during the January transfer window, and he will continue the South American revolution at the Ukrainian club.
Bernard, who netted 22 times in 100 games in his three years with Atletico Mineiro, starred alongside Brazil legend Ronaldinho as the Belo Horizonte side claimed the Copa Libertadores earlier this year, and the winger was also a key member of the Brazil team that secured victory at this summer’s Confederations Cup.
Arsene Wenger had reportedly outlined a move for highly promising youngster but yet again the Gunners have seen another summer target slip through their fingers.
