There is some breaking news in the Football Transfer Tavern this evening as talkSPORT report that in-demand Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema is preparing to sign a new contract at the Bernabeu.
The 26-year-old, whose existing deal expires in under 18 months, has consistently been linked with Arsenal as his French compatriot Arsene Wenger targets a top-quality forward this summer.
It has been a strong rumour for the last few months in the tavern but today’s speculation indicates that the French international is ready to snub interest from the Premier League to pen an extension with the La Liga giants.
Benzema will be able to leave for nothing next summer and Madrid want to tie him down with interest also expected from Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain.
But now Spanish gossip suggests that the striker will instead sign a contract keeping him with Carlo Ancelotti’s side until 2018.
The contract comes after Benzema found his finishing boots again, bagging 15 goals in 26 league appearances this term, his best form since arriving from Lyon in 2008.
That could leave the Gunners identifying other striking targets for another important summer.
