Arsenal trialist misses out on permanent Gunners contract

Right Back - Ahmed FathyFans in the Football Transfer Tavern are currently having a chuckle at the expense of Championship side Blackpool who recently sent out what was pretty much a team of trialists in a recent friendly.

All sides have trialists at one time or another during the summer but one player that won’t be making a permanent move after a trial is Ahmed Fathi who was recently with Arsenal.

According to talkSPORT, the Egyptian international defender was invited to the club for a two-week trial in North London but he has since returned to Al Ahly.

There was no sign of Fathi at Boreham Wood on Saturday, when Arsenal kicked off their pre-season campaign with a 2-0 win against the Conference South side.

And now Al Ahly supervisor Alaa Abdel-Sadeq has confirmed the 29-year-old will be heading home.

“Fathi confirmed in a telephone call that he will return to Egypt to extend his stay with the team after finishing a trial with Arsenal,” Abdel-Sadeq told news website Al-Ahram Arabic.

Arsenal were in the market for defenders following the departure of Bacary Sagna but the signing of French international Mathieu Debuchy means that interest in Fathi has now ended.

Arsenal fans: Fathi may not have earned himself a contract but there is sure to be some more defenders coming in, especially if Thomas Vermaelen leaves. Who do you want to see come in? Let us know your thoughts below.
