In this instalment of our TT Roundup, Football Transfer Tavern have gathered three of the biggest stories to have involved Arsenal recently and have provided our thoughts on the reports published.
Jose Mourinho open to succeeding Unai Emery
According to ESPN FC, former Chelsea and Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho would be interested in succeeding Unai Emery as Arsenal boss should the opportunity arise.
Emery has been under intense pressure as his side’s indifferent start to the season continued in the weekend’s draw at home to Crystal Palace.
There is no suggestion that Emery is in line to be sacked, but the currently unemployed Portuguese has reportedly shown an interest in filling any future vacancy.
The fact that this has become a story perhaps points to the predicament Arsenal find themselves in at the moment, with their poor form of late now clearly prompting questions surrounding the manager’s future.
Having been a rival of the club for so many years, it may be strange to link Mourinho to the Arsenal hotseat, though he has shown through his stint with Manchester United that he will go anywhere in an attempt to achieve success, regardless of any loyalty to his former clubs.
With Emery still at the helm, it may be wise not to get too caught up in the rumours, though this development adds to the possibility given Mourinho was pictured at the Emirates in the past week.
Gunners interested in Zakaria swoop
Arsenal have made enquiries over a move for Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Denis Zakaria, according to Sky Deutschland (via the Daily Star).
Premier League rivals Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham have all shown an interest in the 22-year-old, with the Swiss international attracting plenty of potential suitors across the continent.
There are plenty of reasons why Zakaria would appeal to Arsenal. A main one would be his position of defensive midfield, which may need strengthening in light of the club’s poor defensive record – with just two league clean sheets achieved this season.
Another is his versatility, with Zakaria competent at centre-back, according to Transfermarkt. With the likes of William Saliba already set to bolster that position, a move for the midfielder could remove the need to further improve that area of the squad.
The reported amount of competition may make the Emirates Stadium an unlikely destination, but you can see why Arsenal may feel he could be a good fit, with his side currently atop the Bundesliga standings.
Summer target Rugani under siege from European clubs
According to Calcio Mercato, Arsenal are set to resume efforts to bring summer target Daniele Rugani to North London – though the Juventus centre-back is on the wish lists of many European sides.
Liverpool have recently joined the race, while the Italian outlet claims Arsenal will explore the possibility of gaining his signature once again, with Rugani yet to play for Maurizio Sarri’s side this season.
It is not surprising to see Arsenal in the hunt for a centre-back given their defensive frailties were exposed once again as they were held by Crystal Palace on Sunday.
Going back in for Rugani may suggest they are looking for a cost-effective deal, with the Italian defender rated at just £19.8m by Transfermarkt, so perhaps the Gunners seek a bargain having previously been linked with a big-money move for RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano.
