In this instalment of our TT Roundup, Football Transfer Tavern have gathered three of the biggest stories to have involved Arsenal recently and have provided our thoughts on the reports published.
Aubameyang in contract talks
According to Gazzetta Dello Sport (via Sky Sports), Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is set to begin negotiations over a new contract at the Emirates Stadium.
Aubameyang’s current deal does not run out until 2021 but it is thought that Gunners chiefs are keen to extend his contract by a further two years.
The Gabon striker was Arsenal’s record signing when he joined in January 2018 for £56m.
This would look like a move that makes sense for Arsenal, not only because Aubameyang is in prime form at the moment with seven strikes in eight Premier League games, but the club have previously allowed the likes of Aaron Ramsey to run down deals and leave for nothing.
Getting in early avoids that possibility and would certainly be a statement from the club with regards to how directors such as Raul Sanllehi are running things following former CEO Ivan Gazidis’ departure last season.
Gunners could send Nketiah to Bristol
The Sun reports that Bristol City are keen on snatching Eddie Nketiah from Championship rivals Leeds United, should he be recalled by Arsenal in January.
It has been reported that the Gunners are unhappy with the amount of game time the 20-year-old has been given at Elland Road, and with the Robins still said to be keen on bringing the striker in, Arsenal may allow Lee Johnson to take Nketiah to Ashton Gate in the new year.
Nketiah is yet to start a league game for the Whites, but has netted four times in eight appearances for Marcelo Bielsa’s side.
Nketiah’s development seems to be at the forefront of Arsenal’s priorities, and it could be a sign of the youngster’s promise if the Gunners are placing a lot of importance on the striker getting the most out of his time away from the Emirates Stadium.
And with Bristol City actively keen, it seems there is a way out for Nketiah if it is deemed that his chances of breaking into the Leeds first team have not improved in the weeks ahead.
Dawson on Gunners radar
16-year-old midfielder Joey Dawson is reportedly attracting interest from Arsenal, according to the The Sun.
Dawson – the nephew of ex-Spurs defender Michael – currently plays for League Two outfit Scunthorpe United, and the Gunners are thought to be interested in a January approach for the youngster.
Arsenal’s interest in Dawson perhaps highlights the promise his senior career has, although the midfielder is still largely an unknown quantity.
Dawson has only featured once for Scunthorpe this season, but was named in the matchday squad throughout August.
So it may be a gamble if Arsenal decide to develop his talents at the club, though with the likes of youngsters Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka allowed to make a name for themselves recently, he could be given a fair chance in North London if he makes the grade.
Arsenal fans, how critical is it to renew Aubameyang’s deal? What should the club do with Eddie Nketiah? And can you see a talent like Dawson getting a chance at the Emirates Stadium? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
