Here in The Football Transfer Tavern we’ve been constantly impressed with the amount of young talent produced by Southampton.
From Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to the latest stars in the form of Adam Lallana and Luke Shaw, the club prides itself in its youth academy.
Now James Olley from London Evening Standard has popped into the bar with news of possible interest from Arsenal for the latest young star off the production line at St. Mary’s.
Young Saints right back Calum Chambers has reportedly been outlined by Arsene Wenger as he seeks a replacement for Bacary Sagna in his team.
Chambers has made 19 appearances for Mauricio Pochettino’s side this term and only penned a four-year extension during last summer.
Despite this, today’s speculation suggests that the 19-year-old could be available at around £10 million with both the Gunners and Manchester United considering a summer move for the impressive young defender.
Wenger could lose Sagna for free at the end of the season with the 31-year-old demanding wages worth over £100,000-a-week – something the Gunners will not match.
That leaves a gap in the Gunners side with reserve right back Carl Jenkinson not proving he is up to the job on a consistent basis which makes a move for Chambers – an England Under-19 international – very possible.
Would Chambers represent a good replacement for Sagna or do the Gunners need someone more experienced? Let us know your thoughts below.
