Having been at great pains to assure the whole world that he would not be making any signings in the January transfer window, Arsene Wenger has recently declared exactly the opposite, and is now preparing for a very busy month of negotiations as he looks to re-enforce his squad.
So, as far as potential transfer targets go, all bets are off, and the rumours are flying fast. Although reports of a £22m bid for Barcelona’s Javier Mascherano will still come as a surprise to many.
Caughtoffside has it that the Argentine has struggled to fit in at Barca since his move only four months ago, and that Wenger is keen to find a tough-tackling midfielder following his side’s limp performance against title rivals Manchester United.
However, this really doesn’t give us the whole story as, according to the Spanish media, Mascherano not only knew that in joining Barcelona he would have to play second fiddle to rising star Sergio Busquets, but the ex-Liverpool man was also very happy to do so, simply vowing to make the most of every opportunity he had at the Nou Camp.
As Mercafutbol puts it, Mascherano has fulfilled these words to the letter thus far, adding that every time he does take to the field, he puts in a dazzling display.
So Masch actually seems happy enough. Why, then, would a move to the Emirates be on the cards, for a sum which Wenger would normally be loath to spend?
Well, the answer to that one could be very simple: a straight swap deal, Javier Mascherano for Cesc Fabregas, at the end of the season.
What about it, Arsenal fans?
