Defence! Defence! Defence! Arsenal have needed to strengthen this key area of the field for a number of years now and this summer must be the time Unai Emery finally sorts it out for them.
The Gunners can look rather shoddy at times when it comes to their backline, as they look as fragile as a China vase at times.
However, one man that has been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium could be the man to finally sort those issues and make it a problem of the past – and all for an attractive transfer fee!
What’s the News?
According to a report by Marca (via Sport Witness), Arsenal ‘want to buy’ Djené Dakonam from Getafe this summer.
It is claimed that the Togo international has a release clause of €35million, which roughly translates into £30m.
Arsenal could certainly do with a player of Dakonam’s ability at the back as he has proved to be a rock for his current club.
The Getafe defender has been hugely impressive this season for the La Liga high-flyers as they look to continue their outstanding pursuit for Champions League football next year.
With Emery’s current options hardly making a positive impression with the fans at the moment, the 27-year-old would have to be considered an upgrade and one that could finally help them to tighten up at the back and stop goals from flying into the back of their net.
Dakonam has managed to help his side concede just 32 goals in La Liga this season, which is the second fewest in the league behind Atletico Madrid.
Physically strong and blessed with pace and intelligence, the African also has an excellent ability of being able to put in a crucial tackle and is exceptional when it comes down to breaking up the play when it matters most.
He would also provide Emery and the Gunners with some much-needed versatility as he can play on the right-hand side of the defence, an area that has looked all too suspect for the Premier League side over recent seasons.
£30m for a defender of Dakonam’s quality can be a rare price these days and it is one Arsenal must surely look to take advantage of this summer.
Arsenal fans, do you think Dakonam would be a quality addition? Should Emery do all he can to bring him to the Emirates Stadium this summer? Join in with the discussion below by sharing your thoughts with us.
