Arsenal have had a brilliant few weeks – but can they end October with a bang? They’re set to take on Watford this weekend in a game that will bet yet another test of Unai Emery’s quality. After a slow start, the Gunners have turned it around as of late, and Emery and his players deserve tremendous credit as a result.
Everyone in the team has, at one point or another, shown their class this season, and now it’s down to Emery to keep that momentum going this weekend.
As he builds to the fixture, he’ll likely be thinking about the team that he’s going to select, and whilst his attack and defence largely picks itself, to a point, the Spaniard has far more choice in midfield.
However, at this point in the season, the suitability of his players is becoming apparent, and so perhaps a slightly new-look midfield could be called upon.
After playing a bit-part role so far, perhaps it’s time for Emery to finally call upon Lucas Torreira on a regular basis. The midfielder offers fantastic energy, determination and aggression in the midfield, and he’s the sort of player that can add some bite in a role that has desperately lacked it in recent years. He’s only young, but when he has played this season he’s looked tremendous, and having adjusted to the Arsenal style over the last few weeks, he now looks more than ready to turn out in the Arsenal first team on a more regular basis.
Torreira presence in the team should reduce the demands on Granit Xhaka, too. He’s been poor this term, but Torreira’s defensive focus allows Xhaka to play as more of a box-to-box midfielder – and he could excel in that role. Making use of his excellent passing, energy and grit, the Swiss ace has looked far more comfortable when Torreeira is in the team.
Playing beyond them, perhaps Ozil could turn out in his regular number 10 role. He’s had a mixed campaign so far, but his quality is clear for all to see. It’s only a matter of time before he finds his best form again, and when he does, Emery will be pleased that he’s continued to show faith in the German.
The midfield has the perfect balance of defence and attack, and that’s all Emery can ask for.
