One of Arsenal’s main areas to strengthen over the summer was in midfield, and with the additions of Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi, they seemed to have done that.

While both players look like they could turn out to be superb signings, Arsenal still needed to add another defensive midfielder to their midfield numbers.

Over the summer, the club were heavily linked with a move for World Cup winner, Steven Nzonzi following his fall out with Sevilla.

It seemed as if Unai Emery was very keen on bringing the midfielder to the Emirates after working with him for a brief time in Spain.

It now seems that Arsenal will miss out on Nzonzi as the French midfielder has arrived in Rome ahead of his move to AS Roma.

The Breakdown

During his time with Sevilla, Nzonzi turned into one of the better holding midfielders in Europe.

His ability to read the game and ability to take the ball from the back and move it quickly proved to be essential to Sevilla's performances and it’s something Arsenal could’ve done with.

Lucas Torreira looks like he could be an energetic defensive presence for the Gunners but following Xhaka’s poor performance combined with the Gunners’ lack of depth, Arsenal needed another body in midfield.

With the quality Nzonzi has with the ball and his experience of playing in the league, he could’ve been a vital player in helping Torreira and Guendouzi bed in.
