Arsenal would solve all their midfield problems by landing £31.5m-rated playmaker

The Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern have been disappointed by the performances of both Granit Xhaka and Mohamed Elneny this season, but recent reports suggest they will struggle for first-team opportunities next season.

According to reports in the Daily Mirror, Arsenal have held talks with Ligue 1 outfit Nice over the signing of Jean Michael-Seri, although Chelsea are leading the race to secure his signature. Seri has emerged as one of the most sought-after midfielders in Europe this season due to his brilliant displays in a deep-lying anchor role, so Arsenal’s interest is certainly well-placed.

In recent years the resident Gunners faithful propping up our bar have been calling for the acquisition of a central midfield player who has the potential to control the midfield and provide sufficient protection to their back-four. Thus far, Arsenal have failed in their efforts to secure the services of a player who fits that description, but Seri could provide the answer to that nagging club problem.

Xhaka has proven to be a liability at times despite the fact he was brought to the club to provide a strong shield for the back-four, whilst Elneny is quite simply below the level that is required of a a top-four midfield player. It will certainly be a tough ask for Arsenal to fend off competition from elsewhere to lure Seri to the Emirates, but if they are successful in their bid they could be set for a return to the Champions League next season.

Seri (valued at £31.5 million by Transfermarkt) typically operates in an anchor role where he is comfortable receiving the ball in tight areas and dictating the tempo of proceedings – something which Arsenal have been missing for years. The Ivory Coast international is also a strong and agile player with an intelligent defensive brain, so he should have no problem breaking up attacks in the Premier League if he eventually makes the switch to Arsenal.

Whoever succeeds Arsene Wenger will have a huge rebuilding job on their hands this summer, but if they begin an upheaval by bringing Seri to the club, they will have a fantastic opportunity to become a resounding success in North-London.
