56 caps, the international rock that Arsenal simply must begin their summer rebuild with

Our Arsenal fans here in the Transfer Tavern really are looking forward to the summer now so they can forget all about this season.

This campaign really has been below par for the men from the Emirates this year and it now looks highly unlikely that they are going to finish in the Champions League spots come the end of the season.

For many, then, the Gunners need serious change in personnel when the next window opens up for business and one man who might not be a bad start to incoming proceedings has to be Blaise Matuidi.

Last summer, when Arsenal signed Granit Xhaka, we thought that the Gunners had finally signed the extra star needed to add steel to the club’s midfield.

Instead, though, the Swiss international has been nothing short of a liability and now it seems as though the club is back to square one in that regard.

Time, then, for the Gunners to stop taking punts on players and instead go for a star that knows what it takes to win titles, play at the very highest level and, crucially, perform in the holding role with discipline and tenacity.

Matuidi reads the game superbly and is a much better suited option to bring leadership in the heat of battle than the tempestuous Xhaka.

He only turned 30-years-old last month too, then, and would therefore represent an affordable, low-risk, quality option on which Arsenal should begin their rebuild.
