Another Arsenal Midfielder Wants Out

Arsenal’s tough-tackling midfielder Abou Diaby has admitted that he would like to ply his trade in Spain for either Real Madrid or Barcelona. Speaking prior to Arsenal’s last 16 Champions League match-up with tournament favourites Barcelona, the French midfielder confessed his desire to play his football in the Primera Liga in the future, saying to Don Balon,

“At some point I would like to play for Barcelona or Real Madrid, but I would prefer to play for Barca, because I prefer their style.”

The rangy Frenchman has often been compared to compatriot and Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira, who himself has suggested that Diaby is the man to take on his mantle as France and Arsenal’s box to box midfielder. The 24 year-old Diaby responded by saying to L’Equipe,

“[Vieira saying I’m his natural successor] is an honour for me. But it will require some work to reach his level and achieve what he did. I hope to get there one day, and perhaps even achieve more.”

Having won no silverware yet with the Gunners, Diaby has some way to go to match, let alone eclipse Vieira’s achievements, but he could take a step towards his target with a Champions League medal. Arsenal vs Barcelona is the tie of the round in the last 16 and should Diaby and co. manage to put the shackles on Messi, Xavi, Iniesta et al then their chances of a first win in Europe’s premier competition would increase dramatically. Such a feat would be no easy task though, as Diaby readily admits,

“Barca are a great team, and this year they are very strong. Messi is the best in the world. We all know that the Argentine is a great player who can make the difference at any time, but we cannot focus only on him.”

As Arsenal prepare for the big clash with Barca, Diaby must be aware that if his dream one day to play for the Catalan giants is to come true, there cannot be a better time to make an impression than in these two games against them. Twitter bug? Follow me here: @stuartcfootball
