Atletico Madrid have called on agent Jorge Mendes to broker a deal for Thomas Lemar to Arsenal, according to Marca (via The Mirror).
The Gunners are said to have renewed their interest in the player with the 24-year-old having been discussed by club scouts as they look for targets.
Head coach Mikel Arteta openly admitted he will meet with the club’s chief as they discuss their transfer plans for the current window.
Is a move for the winger really needed? The club have a raft of young attacking talent, whose progression will be thwarted in the signing of another big-name European player, who has slowly become a bit of a failure.
In his time in La Liga, Lemar has hardly set the world alight, and the mere fact Atletico want to sell him is quite alarming as to how he is progressing.
Three goals and six assists in over 60 appearances across all competitions are abysmal numbers (via Transfermarkt).
To show you how worrying Lemar’s contribution in Spain is, the vastly younger Bukayo Saka has two goals and five assists across all competitions in just this season, one less goal contribution than Lemar has managed in his entire career at Atletico.
Indeed, it’s not like the north London outfit don’t have the firepower upfront when you look past the main three Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette and Mesut Ozil
Emile Smith Rowe, Gabriel Martinelli, Bukayo Saka, Reiss Nelson and Joe Willock can all play in attacking positions and could have their growth stunted if Lemar is signed.
Judging by his failed spell in Spain, Arsenal dodged a bullet when they failed to sign Lemar in the summer transfer window of 2017 and to go back in for him when he has shown his limitations would be an inexplicable move.
Arteta has younger and hungrier, with Nelson’s performances so far acting as an example, options at the club and would be wise in steering clear of any deal for the former AS Monaco man.
