Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern have quickly gathered around the TV to hear of a completed deal, although it’s not exactly what they wanted to hear.
Arsene Wenger has today confirmed in his pre-match press conference ahead of the clash with Burnley on Sunday that the Gunners have agreed a one-year extension to the contract of Per Mertesacker, who is yet to feature this season.
Wenger confirms Arsenal have exercised option to extend Mertesacker's contract for another season.

The German World Cup winner has spent the season so far sat on the sidelines and battling injury, whilst his path to the first-team could be blocked upon his return as the Gunners already boast Laurent Koscielny, Shkodran Mustafi, Rob Holding and Gabriel Paulista.
Despite the issues and potential lack of football, Arsenal have decided to extend the 32-year-old German’s contract by one season- in a similar situation to what the Gunners have seen previously with Mikel Arteta, who remained the club captain in his latter years despite regularly failing to feature.
