Chelsea punters in the Transfer Tavern have spent the last few months chewing our landlord’s ear off about the prospect of their club signing Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez this summer.
The Chile international is rated by the Tavern’s Gunners drinkers as their club’s most important player, having notched up 19 goals and nine assists in the Premier League this season – including a superb free kick in a 2-1 win over Middlesbrough on Monday night.
But Sanchez’s contract is due to expire at the end of next season, suggesting he could be on the move this summer, and the situation has inevitably attracted interest from some of Arsenal’s Premier League rivals, with The Guardian describing the winger-forward in March as Chelsea’s ‘No.1 summer transfer target’.
According to The Sun, however, Wenger is determined to keep the South American out of the clutches of Arsenal’s London neighbours as well as Manchester City by agreeing a £50million deal with French champions PSG instead.
It’s further added that Wenger is friends with the club’s president Nasser Al- Khelaifi, who he suspects has already held talks with the in-demand attacker, and that PSG have the financial firepower to outbid both the Blues and the Citizens.
There is still the potential for Sanchez to sign a new contract in north London – something Arsenal patrons in the Tavern are desperate to see – but a departure is looking increasingly likely as the summer transfer window draws nearer.
