Arsenal and Chelsea are preparing to battle it out for the signature of Barcelona’s next teenage sensation Gerard Deulofeu, according to French website LesTransferts.fr.
Deulofeu is only 17 and is therefore not allowed to sign a professional contract with any club until he turns 18. The youngster is highly rated by Barcelona and the Spanish side see him as the next young prodigy to come through their long line of youth products at the Camp Nou, which includes the likes of Xavi, Andres Iniesta, Carles Puyol, Gerard Pique, Cesc Fabregas and of course the world’s best footballer, Lionel Messi.
Barcelona would hate to lose the youngster in the way they lost Cesc Fabreagas to Arsenal in 2003 when he was aged just 16 and will do everything to hang onto him. But Arsenal and Chelsea know that while he still hasn’t signed a professional deal, they can tempt him to England.
Chelsea recently signed the 19 year-old Spanish Under-21 international Oriol Romeu from Barcelona and they are looking to once again raid the Catalans for one of their young assets.
Deulofeu has two years remaining on his youth contract at Barcelona, but it includes a clause which allows him to accept a big money move to an oversees club. But any team wanting to sign Deulofeu would have to pay a compensation fee to Barcelona, believed to be around £3 million.
The young Spaniard, dubbed Barcelona’s ‘next Lionel Messi’, will have a lot of thinking to do over the coming months, as he must decide where his bright future lies.
