Arsenal are closely monitoring Athletic Bilbao defender Unai Nunez ahead of the January transfer window, according to Football Insider.
The Gunners are looking to fix what is a brittle backline and are assessing centre-back options as a result.
An Arsenal source told Football Insider, the club are sending scouts to Spain regularly to assess the Spaniard and the side plan on stepping up their efforts to sign Nunez.
Arsenal aren’t the only Premier League club interested in Nunez with Everton also thought to be admirers.
With what is a very bad backline – one slated by BBC pundit Garth Crooks – Arsenal need get all the help they can get in terms of personnel. The Gunners have already conceded 11 goals in their eight league games this season (via Premier League).
David Luiz and Sokratis, the club’s starting centre-backs in the last seven games in the league have shown their weaknesses. Both men have made mistakes which have directly led to goals being conceded in games against Watford and Liverpool.
As well as mistakes, both men are the wrong side of 30 and are most definitely short-term options for the club, who will need to be replaced in the near future.
Nunez showed his ability at centre-half for Bilbao last season. In 12 La Liga appearances for the Spanish side, Nunez averaged 4.8 clearances per game, a figure that would’ve made him the second-highest in the list of Arsenal players this campaign. This shows his ability to read the game is very good, and at only 22-years-old, it will only develop further.
Signing Nunez would also fit the club’s current transfer policy of looking to youth. Apart from David Luiz, all of Arsenal’s signings in the summer were aged 23 or below, showing the keenness to introduce a more youthful outlook on the first-team squad (via Transfermarkt).
Manager Unai Emery has a poor defence that desperately needs improving given some of the results and performances this season. Looking at the stats above, Nunez has the ability to read the game, and at 22-years-old, can develop more in the future.
