Arsenal are attempting to convince Atletico Madrid’s Thomas Partey to join the club in the summer transfer window, according to Libertad Digital.
The Gunners have informed the player’s agent that they want to sign the player, but the Ghana international is keen to remain at Atletico. It has also emerged that the player has a €50m (roughly £41.8m) release clause in his contract.
When compared to the likes of Lucas Torreira, who is also a defensive midfielder, Partey has shown he is a superior player. The Ghanaian averages more tackles, more interceptions and more clearances per league game than the Uruguay international, as per WhoScored.
However, it’s not just the defensive side of the game where the 26-year-old excels in comparison to the 24-year-old. When it comes to passing, he averages more passes and more long balls per league game than his rival. This really does highlight how much more involved in the game Partey is compared to Torreira and also suggests he has better ability on the ball, which could make him a better option in the centre of the pitch.
Prior to joining the club, Mikel Arteta claimed that he wanted to played ‘expressive’ and ‘entertaining’ football, which makes Partey a very good signing. Indeed, his stats suggest he boasts very good ability on the ball, which makes him a better option than Torreira, who seemingly has limited quality when in possession in comparison.
However, what proves even more crucial is the Atletico ace’s defensive qualities, which show he would be a supreme addition to an Arsenal side who have conceded the eighth-most goals in the top-flight.
