Arsenal are pondering a January move for Athletic Bilbao defender Aymeric Laporte, according to reports from The London Evening Standard.
The 20-year-old French centre-back has recently established himself as a first-team regular at Athletic Bilbao and is currently considered to be one of La Liga’s finest young players.
He has even been linked with a call-up to represent Les Bleus at senior international level, with his performances having garnered attention across the continent.
His displays have caught the eye of Arsene Wenger, who is known to be in the market for a new defender this January.
The Frenchman has already confessed that a replacement for former captain Thomas Vermaelen – sold to Barcelona over the summer – is needed, with Laporte a mooted option.
In the absence of the Belgian, Wenger has been forced to use right-back Calum Chambers out of position on a number of occasions, as well as a host of younger players in cup games.
Laporte has featured in all but one of Athletic’s league games so far this campaign as well as their three Champions League clashes.
