Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern have come to the realisation that time is nearly up for Per Mertesacker at Arsenal and after being such a wonderful servant for the club, the Gunners will need to address the big German’s void this summer.
Unfortunately for Mertesacker, his time on the pitch has been very limited and with his retirement drawing closer and closer, Arsenal would be wise, right now, to start looking for an adequate replacement. A player our punters believe that could be capable of this is young French centre-back Benjamin Pavard, a player valued at £10.80 million on Transfermarkt.
Since moving to Germany and Stuttgart at the beginning of the 2016/17 season, the young defender has come on leaps and bounds and has since earned himself a place in the French national team. That achievement highlights really how good Pavard has been and still could progress on to be.
The 22-year-old has played in 29 games this season, with 9 of those matches resulting in a clean sheet kept for Benjamin Pavard and the Stuttgart side. Versatility is the one word that comes to mind when describing the Frenchman and this is because he really can be deployed anywhere on the pitch. Although he prefers to be at the heart of the defence, Pavard has also played right-back, defensive midfield and even as a right-midfielder this season.
This type of versatility is hard to come by but makes the Frenchman a standout player and one that Arsenal would be silly not to acquire. Our punters believe Arsenal wouldn’t go wrong with the capture of Benjamin Pavard considering he has such a big future ahead of him.
