If you were to think of the modern-day Arsenal defender, what comes to mind?

Perhaps a silky, elegant centre-back who looks more like a midfielder than a defender, or maybe a lean, lanky player who just somehow manages to get in those last-ditch tackles. Whatever you think of, one of the lacking qualities you are likely to imagine is strength and bulk.

It’s felt like forever since the Gunners had a defender who could be labelled a ‘powerhouse’. That defender whose presence is felt throughout the entire pitch and whose imposing figure makes attackers scared in their boots when venturing towards goal, but this summer that can all change with the latest centre-back to be linked with a move to north London.

According to France Football via Sport Witness, the Gunners are interested in Borussia Dortmund defender Dan-Axel Zagadou, and although the centre-back is just 20-years-old, he has everything Arsenal are lacking in central defence.

At 6’5”, the France U-20 international is by far and away taller than anyone in the Arsenal squad, with Konstantinos Mavropanos currently the tallest member of the Gunners senior team at 6’3”, and this much-needed height, as well as physical bulk, is something the north London side have lacked over the years.

Just watching Zagadou in games for Dortmund and you can see how physically imposing the defender is in the German outfit's back line, and with Arsenal in desperate need of a new centre-back this summer, we believe the French youngster is exactly what the Gunners need.

As well as physically imposing, Zagadou’s defensive numbers for Dortmund last season have been fairly impressive considering the 20-year-old only played 15 league games for them.

Comparing the defender to Dortmund’s other centre-backs, Abdou Diallo and Manuel Akanji, with stats from WhoScored, Zagadou made more interceptions per 90 than both his club teammates at 1.5 per game, as well as more clearances (4.1) and blocks (0.6).

With Mats Hummels returning to Dortmund this summer, there could be an opening for the Gunners to make one of the coups of the window in Zagadou, who can bring fear back to defending at the club.

Arsenal fans, would you take Zagadou this summer? Let us know!
