Report: Juventus defender linked to Arsenal
Reports in Italy have hinted that Arsenal are interested in making a move for Juventus defender Daniele Rugani.
According to Tutto Mercato Web, Rugani could be set to fall out of favour at the Serie A champions, who have recently added former Ajax centre-back Matthijs de Ligt to their existing ranks which include the likes of Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci.
So 24-year-old Rugani could be up for grabs, with Juventus’ domestic rivals AC Milan and Roma both said to be in the market for a defender.
Arsenal could well be interested in another centre-back themselves – despite the Gunners nearing a deal to bring Saint-Etienne youngster William Saliba to the club.
The Gunners’ transfer business has become further complicated by Laurent Koscielny’s shocking behaviour that saw the Arsenal captain omit himself from the squad’s pre-season tour after failing to negotiate a new deal.
With the Frenchman reportedly seeking a move away, and Saliba being sent back out on loan to Saint-Etienne as part of his as-yet unconfirmed deal, Arsenal face heading into the new season with fewer defenders than they started with.
Having already started to recruit in that position through the expected addition of the French teenager, the uncertain future facing Koscielny (with the club yet to discipline the centre-back following their statement) may suggest Arsenal have to revisit targets in that area before the transfer window expires in under three weeks’ time.
The prospect of Rugani leaving the Turin giants doesn’t seem to be too far-fetched, with the duo of Chiellini and Bonucci playing far more often last season (34 times and 41 times respectively in all competitions – compared to Rugani’s 20 appearances) and the added arrival of Matthijs De Ligt.
Spending almost £77m (per Transfermarkt) on teenager de Ligt could add another threat to Rugani’s position in the Juventus pecking order, though with Arsenal potentially back in the market for a defender, a good opportunity could present itself to both Rugani and the north London club if the Italian champions do indeed make their man available.
