It hasn’t exactly been the best of seasons for the Arsenal fans propping up the bar in the Transfer Tavern, who have watched their side’s title challenge – in their eyes at least – end far earlier than expected.
Such is the nature of disappointment amongst the Gunners in the Tavern, even a 4-0 thumping of Swansea City away over the course of the weekend did little to spark much title-related optimism. So it’s fair to say the north London locals need some cheering up.
Well, reports from the Times are at least somewhat promising. Perhaps not overly promising, but those who frequent the Emirates in their droves will take what they can get right now.
They’ve claimed Per Mertesacker has agreed a new deal with the club despite not playing all season, with only six months to run on his current contract with the Premier League giants. The World Cup winner has surely fallen down the pecking order following the arrival of compatriot Shkodran Mustafi and has been struggling with a knee injury.
Still, the 32-year-old will reportedly sign on for another year and the news has got a slight cheer amid all the misery, though he’s barely Alexis Sanchez or Mesut Ozil.
What’s the point in keeping Mertesacker? Let us know below…
