Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern didn’t have much to shout about last night after being stunned by Ostersunds in the Europa League, losing 2-1 on the night and advancing 4-2 on aggregate. However, the performance of Egyptian midfielder Mohamed Elneny did provide a few positives, albeit not many.
The 25-year-old joined Arsenal for £11.25 million back in the summer of 2016 and has had to make do with appearances predominantly in the domestic cup competitions and in Europe. Despite his limited game time Elneny does have some feats to boast since joining the North Londoners, scoring in the final of the African Cup of Nations despite losing 2-1 to Cameroon in 2017 and scoring with a sublime effort against Barcelona for Arsenal in last seasons Champions League.
Given his status in Arsenal’s squad as a fringe player, it’s hard to find criticism for the consistent performances he provides when asked upon. This was the case again as he was one of the better players for Arsenal last night on an evening that most fans, players and everyone else associated with Arsenal will want to forget as soon as possible. It goes as a credit to Elneny that even the Arsenal fans, who are somewhat infamous for being critical, found reason to praise their smooth operator.
Here’s a closer look at it.
One thing you can say about Elneny is that he never disgraces himself. He tries, runs, presses, stays intense.

Thought Elneny was our best player again. Very underrated.

Elneny easily our best player on the pitch today. Only one really interested in playing.

My MOTM is Elneny. The rest are awful.
