Arsenal fans were left feeling underwhelmed after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was announced as captain of the club after Granit Xhaka was stripped of the role.
Is Aubameyang a suitable captain for Arsenal?
The 51-cap Gabon international was announced as the new captain in Unai Emery’s pre-match press conference ahead of the game against Vitoria S.C.
Aubameyang was plagued with rumours over his conduct and attitude prior to his move to the Emirates Stadium, with reports claiming he missed a team meeting in January 2018, leading to him being suspended by Borussia Dortmund (via The Guardian).
Fast forward to 2019, and he still seems to be squabbling with members of the hierarchy from his former club. The 31-year-old lashed out at Hans-Joachim Watzke following the CEO’s comments on the forward’s move to north London (Suddeutsche Zeitung via The Metro).
It seems the fans aren’t too keen to see Aubameyang take over the role of captain from Xhaka as they took to Twitter to react.
Here is a selection of tweets from the north London faithful:
Oh good. Because when I think leadership, I think Aubameyang.
Seriously Unai just stop taking decisions already. The next man in already has to clean up your mess, don’t make it any worse.

Fact is we don’t have a proper natural captain at the club

While I don’t think Aubameyang is the best choice right now for the armband, given his age, when he moves on it will be the perfect time for The Bhoy Kieran Tierney to take over and that will be the best captain since Vieira.
