Arsenal fans on Twitter were raging not to be given a penalty last night

Arsenal fans will be absolutely devastated this morning. The Gunners went into their Baku final against Chelsea with high hopes of winning their first European trophy for 25 years, yet they got well and truly battered, losing 4-1 to the Blues. It may have been different, though, had VAR ruled an early clash between Kepa and Lacazette as a penalty.

When the French striker was going through on goal he took a wide touch away from goal before leaving his leg out to try and take some contact from the on-rushing Kepa Arrizablaga to win a spot-kick. The referee was not having any of it, though, and rightly so. The Gunners may have been in uproar over the decision, but the fact that Lacazette was angling for it and left his leg out, catching Kepa in the face, wasn’t enough for a pen.

Had the shoe been on the other foot, it’s very unlikely that the Arsenal fans would have been calling for it to have been a penalty had Petr Cech brought down Eden Hazard in the same manner, so they can’t argue too much. Even if the Gunners had been afforded a penalty by the German referee, who was excellent on the night with a string consistent display of officiating, they still would have had to score it, and then they’d still have lost 4-2 anyway.

The Gunners were fuming not to be given a penalty at 0-0, although at this stage still being angry is clutching at straws.
