Many Arsenal fans have been raving at Danny Welbeck’s winning goal against his old team Manchester United in the FA Cup away from home five years ago, to the point where one fan said that Old Trafford was his ‘training ground’.
The appreciation came after Arsenal posted a throwback video of the goal on their official Twitter page which got a lot of fans raving. With the score level at 1-1, Welbeck rounded the keeper to tap into an empty net in a night that saw Arsenal beat United at Old Trafford for the first time in nine years, since Emmanuel Adebayor clinched a 1-0 victory for the Gunners in the Premier League back in 2006. Arsenal had found it hard to get wins at Old Trafford in the post-Invincibles era and these two victories mentioned are the only ones in all competitions that the Gunners have managed in this time (11v11).
Nacho Monreal also scored in the throwback game which saw Arsenal go through and eventually win the FA Cup that year, defeating Tim Sherwood’s Aston Villa 4-0 in the final. They won their first major trophy in nine years by beating Hull City in the FA Cup final the previous year and then two years after Aston Villa they beat Chelsea to cement themselves as the club who have won the most FA Cups in history.
Welbeck made a total of 126 appearances for the Gunners, scoring 32 goals and providing a further 15 assists before moving on to Watford in the summer (stats via Transfermarkt). He has only managed to score one goal for the Hornets so far in another injury-struck season for the forward, which came in the EFL Cup, so he is yet to register a goal for them in the Premier League. He could score against Arsenal at the Emirates if he plays for Watford in the last game of the season, and who knows, it may be crucial.
Nevertheless, these Arsenal fans were quick to rave about their former striker on Twitter, with one fan even claiming he achieved ‘legendary status’ by scoring that goal at Old Trafford:
He paid off his transfer fee in that one day.
