Arsenal are eyeing a move for Red Bull Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano, according to Bleacher Report.
Is Arteta the right man for Arsenal?
The club have prioritised a move for a central defender at the beginning of 2020, with a central midfielder next up in terms of priority.
According to the publication, Juventus man Merih Demiral is also one of the names high up on the list of defenders the club want in the winter window.
A move for Upamecano makes the world of sense for the side with the club having conceded an eye-opening 17 goals in their 12 Premier League games so far this season. Their defensive record this campaign is worse than or matches the records of the six other clubs chasing a Champions League position, Leicester City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United (via Premier League).
It wouldn’t be a poor Arsenal defence without numerous defensive mistakes, would it? Both centre-backs, David Luiz and Sokratis, have cost the north London side points this season, with the Brazilian having given away two penalties in his first four games, and the Greece international having passed Tom Cleverly the ball in the side’s draw away to Watford.
Upamecano himself is proving to be a brilliant defender and trumps Arsenal’s veteran pairing, this campaign. The 21-year-old averages more tackles and more offsides per game than both Luiz and Sokratis.
The youngster has also established himself as one of the best young defenders in the world as he was nominated for the 2018 Golden Ball award (via talkSPORT).
With the defender’s contract expiring in the summer of 2021, and Upamecano wanting to leave the club, Leipzig could be forced to sell the defender at a cut-price in January. Given his mistakes, it’d be fair to say Luiz hasn’t quite had the desired impact just with his performances so far this year, and potentially replacing him with Upamecano would be a shrewd move from the Gunners.
