Arsenal: Gunners handed a boost in race to sign Kieran Tierney

With the Daily Mail reporting that Napoli were in a position to overtake Arsenal in the race for Kieran Tierney, it looked like the north London side could miss out on an exciting talent, but that hasn’t proved to be the case.

CalcioNapoli24 report that an insider had told the Neapolitan outlet that Arsenal remained the favourites to sign Tierney from Celtic this summer. However, contact between Napoli and the Scottish left-back has been made and that there is a genuine interest in the defender from the Serie A side.

BBC Sport reported in June that the Gunners were optimistic in getting a deal for Tierney over the line this transfer window, but since that initial report, there is yet to be much news on Arsenal’s progress of a deal with Celtic for the left-back, who is valued on Transfermarkt at £11.25m.

The update from CalcioNapoli24 is no doubt a boost to Arsenal’s summer plans, but with the report clearly stating that Napoli were interested in Tierney, it should serve as a wake-up call for the Gunners who will benefit massively from signing a player of the Scotsman’s quality.

With BBC Sport reporting that one of Arsenal’s plans this summer was to add depth at full-back, the 22-year-old defender more than fits the bill of what the Gunners should be looking at in this transfer window.

As Total Football Analysis write, Tierney is a left-back that is accustomed to playing in a 4-2-3-1 formation as well as a 3-5-1-1, two formations Arsenal used extensively last season as per WhoScored, and with Nacho Monreal entering the twilight years of his career and Sead Kolasinac lacking defensively based on stats from WhoScored when compared to the Spaniard, the Celtic defender would be a welcome addition to the north London side.

Indeed, the scout report also states how well Tierney uses his pace to beat wingers and other full-backs down the left flank, as well as how the left-back’s 8.38 passes per game in the final third shows that the Scottish youngster is a defender who likes to keep the ball flowing in attacking areas.

Arsenal are seemingly back in the hunt for Tierney, but now the Gunners must be willing to take action this summer, and try and get a deal over the line before it’s too late.
