Gunners fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern are sat in stunned silence as listening to one of our bar staff deliver the most shocking news in their recent transfer history.
According to reports from Tribal Football reporter, Emanuele Giulianelli (we’ll get on to him later), Arsenal have been in contact with Atletico Madrid for months concerning a deal for Antoine Griezmann.
The French international was the standout performer at this summer’s European Championships, top scoring with six goals.
However, discussions were reportedly well underway before his heroics this summer, with Wenger biding his time to see what deals fall in place before making a record breaking move.
The Spanish side are reportedly unwilling to accept anything less than €100m for the winger, a deal which (as things stand) would break the British transfer record, set by Man United when they spent £59.7m on Angel Di Maria.
According to Giulianelli – who isn’t exactly a bastion of trustworthy contemporary journalism, he has form when it comes to being wrong – Wenger is delaying to see if Simeone can land a deal to bring Diego Costa in, which would seemingly open the door for the North London side to make their move.
