According to Portuguese publication O Jogo, reported via Metro, Arsenal have made an offer for Atletico Madrid winger Gelson Martins.
Martins only joined the Spanish club in the summer, but has failed to secure a regular place in Diego Simeone’s side. The pacy 23-year-old has made just one La Liga start so far this season, and only twelve appearances in all competitions.
The Madrid club could already be prepared to let the 21-cap Portugal international go, with a loan move to the Emirates Stadium looking like a potential destination.
The Gunners could certainly do with greater options on the flanks. Unai Emery’s recent admission that the north London club are only in a position to complete loan deals this month, as reported by the BBC, severely limits their options though.
Danny Welbeck’s long-term injury leaves Alex Iwobi as the only out-and-out winger currently available to the Spanish coach. What’s more, the recent serious-looking injury sustained by Hector Bellerin makes it likely that Ainsley Maitland-Niles will have to fill in at right-back, further depleting Emery’s options for the wings.
If Emery could bring Martins in on loan this month, and help the struggling attacker to rediscover his best form, then that would be an excellent bit of business.
