Arsenal: Nacho Monreal can’t deal with Crystal Palace’s Wilfred Zaha

Arsenal: Nacho Monreal can’t deal with Crystal Palace’s Wilfred Zaha - Arsenal

What a week it has been for the Gunners! A place in the Europa League semi-finals AND two back to back away clean sheets! Indeed, Unai Emery really has moved this squad away from the Arsene Wenger era. However, the season is far from over and with a visit from Crystal Palace later today, there’s still plenty of work to be done.

The Emirates has become somewhat of a fortress once again this season under Unai Emery, and the Spaniard will look to the heroics of mid-week to boost his players and ensure they continue the push for top 4.

With all the positives, Emery will need to rotate his squad in order to keep fitness levels high, here’s a couple he should look to make.

Drop Nacho Monreal

After coming in and steadying the ship like a true leader, it may be time for Monreal to focus his energy on the Europa League and really use his experience to guide to Gunners to European glory.

At the ripe age of 33, Emery will be well aware that the build-up of games over the coming weeks will be near on impossible for the Spanish defender to continue performing to the highest level for all of them, Emery will need to begin rotation sooner rather than later.

With the likes of Wilfried Zaha coming to town, this may be the perfect time to drop the 33-year-old out.

Start Shkrodan Mustafi

After choosing to use a back three in Naples midweek, Emery should look to switch out Monreal for his teammate and more natural central defender Mustafi.

Having been pivotal for Arsenal in the over defensive display against Watford last week, Mustafi may have earnt himself a spot in the back three of Arsenal’s defence. Missing out on Thursday, Emery may have been saving Mustafi for the tough tie against the likes of Benteke and Zaha, a battle that Mustafi will surely favour himself in.

A game against Palace is no easy task. However, looking practically unstoppable at home this season, Emery will all but favour his side to continue their push for top 4.

Arsenal signed the defender for £36.9 million (as per Transfermarkt) but the London club haven’t really been able to get the best out of him on a consistent basis, so fans will be hoping he puts in a solid performance today.
