Arsenal usually remain quiet during the January transfer and the situation is likely to remain the same this month.
However, the Gunners need to make sure they don’t miss out on the services of one exciting young defender.
With Nacho Monreal declining in ability and now touching the wrong side of 30, Arsenal need to assess their options at left-back because Kieran Gibbs, now 27, has just 18 months remaining on his contract and hasn’t quite shown that he’s good enough to warrant regular first-team football.
It would certainly be wise to look at bringing in a fresh face in this area and Valencia’s Jose Gaya, just 21, is the perfect candidate to improve the Gunners first-team immediately and star in defence for the foreseeable future.
Valencia’s problems mean it will be fairly easy to pinch Gaya, and the rest of their top players, at the end of the season but Arsenal need to be wary they don’t fall behind in the chase by allowing a rival to make contact during the mid-season window.
The likelihood of Valencia, who are remarkably battling the drop in Spain, selling this month is very slim but Arsenal need to be alert of the situation, as missing out on Gaya would be a massive blow – particularly if the Spanish U21 international moved to the Premier League.
Already vastly experienced, with 56 La Liga appearances, Gaya has the capability to shine and he could form a long-lasting defence in North London alongside compatriot Hector Bellerin, former team-mate Shkodran Mustafi and young asset Rob Holding.
Arsenal’s defence has struggled for longevity and ability in the past but Gaya could be the addition to put the Gunners on-course for glory in the coming years.Like what the TT have on offer? Sign up for more notifications!
