Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern have been impressed with the busy their side has done so far, although they’re concerned that things could start to go downhill.
Arsene Wenger is set to focus on trimming the deadwood from his squad between now and the end of the window as he looks to offload a wealth of players that are surplus to requirements, including Carl Jenkinson, Lucas Perez and Mathieu Debuchy.
The Gunners have strengthened their squad significantly this summer following the additions of Sead Kolasinac and Alexandre Lacazette but further outgoing activity from the Gunners may leave their squad lacking depth.
Gabriel Paulista’s return to Spanish football to join Valencia has left Arsenal with limited options in central defence, which is a major concern due to the fact that it seems Wenger is ready to stick with the three-man line that has seen the Gunners achieve success in recent months.
The departure of the Brazilian defender leaves Arsenal with Per Mertesacker, Laurent Koscielny, Shkodran Mustafi and Rob Holding as recognised senior central defenders within the squad, with Calum Chambers widely linked with an exit, whilst Nacho Monreal can fill-in that role when required.
However, just five recognised choices for a central-defensive position is not enough for an Arsenal side that will be battling both domestically and in the Europa League this season, so Wenger needs to get his chequebook out once again to bring in a new defender.
A top-class addition to the back-line to play alongside Koscielny and Mustafi in the first-choice XI could be decisive in Arsenal’s quest to end their long wait for a Premier League title, especially as the Gunners are sure to encounter injury and suspension issues this summer.
