It seems almost too obvious to state that Arsenal need to get back into the Champions League next year. Indeed, a club of that size clearly can’t keep competing in the Europa League if they’re going to seriously challenge the other Premier League heavyweights over the coming years. To give you a bit of context as to why this is probably the case, reports from the Daily Mail earlier this season hinted at a fairly low transfer budget of around £45m, while ESPN claimed in late May that a target such as Dayot Upamecano could go cold on the idea of a move to North London as a result of their failure to qualify for Europe’s top competition.
Obviously, the Gunners’ defence has been woeful this term, conceding more goals than seven of the top ten, 51, so it’s probably fair to say that Unai Emery can’t rely on fixing their back line in one window. So, perhaps he could strengthen their attack in order to help outscore their opponents, in the same way they did against most of the mid-table opposition in the campaign just gone.
So, with that in mind, links with a certain Rusian Malinovskyi should be looked upon as exciting.
Currently, Malinovskyi plays for Gent in Belgium and O Jogo, via Daily Cannon, have reported the Gunners are interested in adding him to their ranks. Why is it exciting? Well, because he scored 16 goals and made 16 assists across all competitions last season.
If they can replace Aaron Ramsey – their main source of goals (joint with Henrik Mkhitaryan on 6, though the Armenian is much more of a winger) from the engine room – perhaps the pressure wouldn’t be on the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubamayeng and Alexandre Lacazette to bear that burden so much.
Obviously, no one would instantly expect the 26-year-old to replicate such statistics right away considering the step up in quality he would potentially be making but this might just be the market in which the Gunners have to shop, considering their apparent transfer budget.
After Ramsey, Granit Xhaka is the next top scoring midfielder with 4 across the whole campaign, so you can start to see the need for more goals throughout the team here. Reportedly available for £10m, Malinovskyi seems like a good fit.
