Pundit Shaka Hislop has urged Arsenal to sign Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey, asking them to ‘do it quick’ before another team goes for him this summer (ESPN).
The Ghanaian international has attracted a lot of interest this campaign and according to a report from the Telegraph, he has a £45 million release clause in his contract. If the clause is still active over the upcoming transfer window, he could prove to be a bargain for the north London club.
Hislop certainly thinks that the Gunners should go in for the 26-year-old, telling ESPN: “Thomas Partey has been outstanding for the last two years at the very least. If you’re Arsenal and you can somehow prise Partey away from Atletico Madrid, absolutely you do it all day every day.
“He sits in front of the back four, I’m still not sure that there are many better box-to-box midfielders in the game. If you get this done, do it now, do it quick.”
Partey has made 77 appearances in all competitions for Atletico Madrid in the past two seasons, scoring six goals and providing a further seven assists, according to Transfermarkt. These stats are impressive considering he plays as a holding midfielder, and are just an added bonus to his defensive abilities.
However, Arsenal may have a problem trying to convince him to move from La Liga if they do not qualify for the Champions League this season, especially if Madrid make it into the competition again. The Gunners currently sit in ninth place in the Premier League table and need to reach at least fifth to qualify (via BBC).
Fans of the north London outfit will therefore be desperate for their side to get the job done this campaign and reach Europe’s elite competition so that they can attract players like Partey to the Emirates in the summer.
