It’s no secret that Shkodran Mustafi is an unpopular figure at Arsenal, and Easter Sunday only lowered the German’s reputation in north London.

A baffling error in the second-half against Crystal Palace from Mustafi allowed Wilfried Zaha to simply take the ball off the defender and slot the ball past Bernd Leno to score the Eagle’s second goal of the match in a 3-2 win for the south London side, and fans were fuming.

Social media was ablaze of posts targeting the former Valencia man for his error, and although Mustafi has had some good performances for Arsenal in recent weeks, his mistake against Palace showed just how risky the 27-year-old is in the team.

His mistake against Palace was not the first we’ve seen from Mustafi this season, and with Sokratis returning from suspension against Wolves this week, now is the time to take the German away from the first-team and keep him firmly on the bench for the remaining games.

With each game becoming more and more important, it’s simply too big a risk to play a defender who is more than happy to give away the ball in dangerous areas or play the wrong pass to the wrong player.

With Unai Emery testing a 3-4-3 and Nacho Monreal, Laurent Koscielny and Sokratis being used as the backline to great success, it is vital the Spanish manager sticks to this back-three and turn to youngster Konstantinos Mavropanos should he need a backup option.

Mustafi will go down in Arsenal history as one of the worst signings in their history, and with each game being must-win occasions for the Gunners, Emery can’t afford an error-prone defender in their defence for the remainder of the season.
