The performances of Hector Bellerin have often divided the Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern who have been disappointed by his failure to fulfil his potential during his career at the club.
Huge things were expected of Bellerin when he burst onto the scene as a 17-year-old as a rapid youngster who had come through the ranks at Barcelona before moving to North-London, but thus far he has failed to improve at the rate many have predicated him to. Bellerin is now 22-years-old and a first-team regular under Arsene Wenger, although there are plenty of supporters who believe his performances this season do not merit the faith his manager continues to show him in.
Under a different manager and within a different environment, it’s likely that Bellerin could begin to flourish and improve various aspects of his game which he is currently struggling to improve upon. And according to The Daily Mail, Bellerin could be given an opportunity to make a fresh start this summer, as Arsenal are reportedly willing to accept an offer in the region of £50 million for his services.
If Arsenal do indeed sell the Spanish international this summer, they will need to replace him with a top quality replacement to ensure they don’t fall further behind their rivals in the Premier League. However, considering The Gunners are relatively short of options at right-back, they should consider signing a player on loan to provide cover for whoever they chose to replace Bellerin.
One player who is worth considering is Manchester City’s Pablo Maffeo who is currently playing his trade on loan at Girona in La Liga. At just 20-year-old, Maffeo is one of the brightest talents to emerge from City’s youth set-up in recent years.
The Spaniard has made 24 appearances in Lia Liga and been an ever-present on the right-side of Girona’s midfield this season, despite the fact he is a right-back by trade. His ability to play at both right-back and right-midfield make him an ideal candidate to move to The Emirates Stadium, as Wenger has regularly implemented a system which requires wing-backs to cover the wide areas this season.
Maffeo has only made 3 appearances for City’s first-team during his short career so far, but he showed enough potential in those performances to suggest he could become a first-team regular for a top Premier League side in the future, so Arsenal should consider signing him on loan this summer if he does not feature in Pep Guardiola’s first-team plans.
