Despite moving into the top four following Chelsea’s heavy defeat to Bournemouth on Wednesday evening, Arsenal fans might not be too excited about with their current situation as they travel to the Etihad on Sunday to face Manchester City.
The Gunners might be a little cautious of getting too optimistic after City suffered a shock 2-1 loss at Newcastle United on Tuesday evening. This means that Pep Guardiola is expected to lift his team for the Sunday’s clash, which could ultimately be dangerous for Unai Emery’s men given the fact that City can’t afford to drop any more points.
Nothing less than a win for Guardiola would be enough, but the manager would want his team to win big and to rip Arsenal apart in order to close the gap on Liverpool at the top of the table.
And Arsenal’s vulnerability at the back could indeed present City with the opportunity to let their attackers demolish the North London club.
But, Arsenal have shown this season that they are also more than capable of scoring goals and Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s recent form should provide a hint of optimism for Emery and his team.
The biggest problem for Emery, though, will be to keep his defence tight and not see them fall to pieces like they did at Liverpool at the end of December.
The manager will probably have to make do with the same back-four he used in the club’s 2-1 win over Cardiff City on Tuesday where Stephan Lichtsteiner, Shkodran Mustafi, Nacho Monreal and Sead Kolasinac were the men responsible at the back.
But up-front, Arsenal had Mesut Ozil returning to the starting lineup and the German proved why he is still a big part of the squad with a couple of clever passes and his all-round ability to move forward and create space for his teammates.
Ozil’s presence will provide the perfect base for Lacazette and Aubameyang to play off and could improve Arsenal’s chances of getting a result at the Etihad.Like what the TT have on offer? Sign up for more notifications!
