Arsenal: Temperamental Granit Xhaka can’t be trusted to protect Unai Emery’s defence - Arsenal

The tides have turned against Arsenal ever since their impressive away win at Napoli, which allowed them to progress into the UEFA Europa League semi-finals.

Indeed, somehow Arsenal were disciplined, clinical and fearless that night in Naples. Since then, however, they’ve seemingly lost all those traits.

Unai Emery’s probably feeling the pressure Arsene Wenger had to endure for years, as he’s now suffered 3 successive losses in the Premier League.  Poor defending, an incoherent shape and frustrating going forward, the worst traits of Arsenal have come into light in the past few weeks.

However, not only their defenders but their midfielders have also let them down. Granit Xhaka, for one, has been unable to spark any kind of a resurgence. On Sunday, the Swiss international was back to his inconsistent self. He recorded a poor 66% passing accuracy, giving away possession too many times against a relentless Leicester City side.

This was quite opposite of his performance against Wolves a few days earlier, where he’d recorded 89% passing accuracy from 90+ passes (stats via Fotmob) and also had an assist. Xhaka’s poor in reading the game and was too reckless with his defensive contribution, something which allowed Leicester to easily overrun Arsenal’s midfield on Sunday.

The Swiss midfielder, on the other hand, was almost like a passenger who allowed the Foxes to bypass the Gunners’ midfield too easily. If Unai Emery wants a defensive midfielder who can smartly tuck in deep to help his side withhold pressure, Xhaka’s too error-prone and emotional to be trusted in fulfilling either requirement.

Arsenal fans, do you think a more trust-worthy defensive midfield should be signed soon? Join the discussion by commenting below…
