Arsenal legend Tony Adams has slammed David Luiz for “sleeping” in the Gunners’ 2-2 draw with Southampton over the weekend.
A quick free-kick caught the home side out as Danny Ings opened the scoring, and Adams has since called out Luiz for his defending in that phase of play.
Who do you prefer?
Speaking on BT Sport (via talkSPORT), the former Arsenal captain said: “That’s a really poor performance and I don’t want any coach losing his job, but the club’s not going forward, it’s not progressing.
“I can put a team together that’s more organised than that!
“They’re all sleeping, look at Luiz here. What is Luiz doing? He’s just standing there.”
Indeed, it was not a good afternoon for Arsenal and Luiz specifically. The 32-year-old was given a 4/10 match rating by Football.London, putting into perspective how lacklustre his performance was on the day.
In Luiz’s defence, he was not the only Arsenal defender to be caught napping for Southampton’s opener. However, Saturday’s 2-2 draw was not the first time this season where his defending has come under intense scrutiny.
The Brazilian did not cover himself in glory in games against Liverpool and Watford earlier in the campaign, giving away penalties on both occasions.
Following his controversial move from London rivals Chelsea in the summer, some had doubts, with ESPN FC‘s Paul Mariner just one pundit who expressed his concern with the Gunners moving for the former Paris Saint-Germain man.
And based on his latest showing, it is not hard to understand why.
