Arsenal target Sebastien Corchia is on the verge of signing for Lyon, according to the player’s agent, handing the Gunners a transfer blow.
Arsene Wenger was reported to be keeping tabs on the Sochaux defender after question marks were raised over the future of Bacary Sagna at the Emirates Stadium, with the Arsenal player stalling on a contract extension.
But Corchia is said to prefer to stay in France and has already made up his mind and will be signing for Ligue 1 side Lyon in the coming days. The Stade Gerland-based outfit are interestingly managed by former Arsenal midfielder Remi Garde.
Corchia’s agent told Sky Sports: “Sebastien has chosen. Lyon is the future, this is what he wants and is what he has planned. I can at least confirm that today.”
Wenger has been an admirer of the French Under-21 right back, who is on the verge of a first call up to the Les Bleus senior national team for some time. However, it appears the Gunners wily old tactician has now lost out on his target with the 22-year-old choosing to remain in Ligue 1.
Corchia, who signed for Sochaux from Le Mans in 2011, has made 67 Ligue 1 appearances, scoring one goal.
Wenger may now up his efforts to keep Sagna at the club, with the 30-year-old French defender approaching the final year of his contract at the Emirates Stadium.
However, Sagna’s age may count against him as Wenger begins rebuilding a squad that will be capable of mounting a serious challenge for the Premier League title over the next few seasons.
Should have Arsenal pushed harder for Corchia’s signature? Will Sagna sign a contract extension with the Gunners? Let us know your thoughts below.
