Former Premier League striker Darren Bent thinks that Unai Emery has run out of ideas at Arsenal – after suggesting the Spaniard ‘doesn’t know what to do’ following his team’s draw against Southampton at the weekend.
The Gunners slumped to another poor result on Saturday as Alexandre Lacazette rescued a point at the death against the 19th-placed Saints, after another disjointed display that saw the Premier League strugglers have 21 shots on the Arsenal goal.
Speaking on the Spaniard’s chances of being dismissed next, he said: “He has got to be up there.
“You can just see by Arsenal’s run. If they can’t beat Southampton at home, who are struggling this season, then what exactly is he doing in training?
“He doesn’t seem to be able to get the best of Lacazette and [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang when they are on the pitch at the same time – it’s either one plays or the other doesn’t.
“He doesn’t know what to do at the back, so for me, there has got to be a change sooner rather than later.”
Bent’s point about Emery’s lack of defensive organisation stands up, with the Gunners deploying a back-three, back-four and a back-five throughout the season so far.
That lack of consistency in terms of a game plan could go some way to explaining Arsenal’s woes, though the results clearly do not suggest that anything is working right now.
And with reports suggesting Arsenal are preparing for life after Emery, it seems the manager needs to decide on a plan and stick to it – and hope that it pays off.
