Arsenal have entered the race to sign Barcelona winger Malcom, with the Brazilian a personal target of Unai Emery’s.
Brazilian publication Globo Esporte report that the Gunners boss is interested in bringing the former Bordeaux winger to the Emirates for next season, with Football London claiming that Arsenal are interested in signing at least one natural winger this transfer window.
Since joining the La Liga giants last summer, Malcom, who is valued on Transfermarkt at £36 million, has failed to make much of an impact in the Barcelona first-team since his reported £36.5 million move according to BBC Sport, with the attacker scoring just four goals and assisting two in 24 appearances for the Catalan side.
Indeed, Malcom only started 11 games last season as stats from Transfermarkt show, and having previously impressed in Ligue 1 for Bordeaux in the 2017/18 campaign where the winger scored 12 goals and assisted eight in all competitions for the French side, it is probably fair to say that consecutive first-team football could bring the 22-year-old’s confidence and form back, and Arsenal could offer that.
Comparing Malcom’s final season at Bordeaux with Alex Iwobi and Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s numbers from last season with stats from WhoScored, the Brazilian winger surpasses the Arsenal duo in virtually every stat.
As well as scoring more goals and assists than the Gunners pair, Malcom averaged more key passes per game at 2.5 compared to Iwobi’s and Mkhitaryan’s 1.1 and 1.2 per game. The Barcelona attacker also averaged more dribbles than the Arsenal wingers at 2.7 per game to 1.3 and 0.8 per game.
Arsenal face competition for Malcom this summer from Everton and PSG (per RMC Sport), but his numbers show that he could be the player Emery is looking for to improve his side out wide.
