Mesut Ozil returned to the starting XI for Arsenal’s 5-5 draw with Liverpool which the Gunners eventually lost on penalties, but the substitution of the German playmaker in the 65th minute has led to some of the club’s fans expressing their disagreement at the removal of their record earner.
Should Ozil come back into the team after Liverpool performance?
Ozil has cut a peripheral figure in the Emery era, with the Spanish coach bemoaning a lack of work ethic and drive in the midfielder. Making his first start in over a month, Ozil put in an impressive performance at Anfield whilst also registering an outstanding assist to put Arsenal 4-2 up on the night.
Whilst Emery opted to start the 31-year-old on Wednesday night, the Spaniard substituted him for Mattéo Guendouzi, and it was a decision that disgruntled a number of the club’s fans after an impressive display from Ozil. Here are some of the best reactions to Emery’s decision to remove the German during the match against the Reds.

Why take off Özil. Horrific decision. Should’ve been Saka.

Man of the match Özil. Absolute masterclass. Every kid who grows up to be an attacking midfielder then this Özil performance is a perfect example. Emery is criminal as always but at least Özil showed once again he is the 🐐. #emeryout
