While none of the Gunners in the Transfer Tavern would go as far as to wish an injury on Per Mertesacker of course, some good has seemingly come from the German’s ailment.
Arsene Wenger has invariably been left a little light in his backline, with one of the more eagle eyed punters having spotted encouraging murmurs from the Daily Mirror.
They claim that the 66-year old is readying a move for Fabian Schar of Hoffenheim, following his impressive performances at EURO 2016 with Switzerland.
Having already signed international teammate Granit Xhaka in a huge money deal, the French tactician would have kept a keen eye over the Swiss during this summer’s tournament in France.
The 24-year old has taken to the continent’s big leagues well since moving from Basel and could be brought in within a matter of days, with Arsenal facing a defensive crisis.
With Laurent Koscielny handed extra time off due to his run to the final with Les Blues, Wenger has only Gabriel and one of Calum Chambers or Rob Holding to call on in central defence.
