Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern are sick of seeing the all to familiar sight of their side defending poorly, which inevitably costs them games and points every year. If the Gunners seriously want to get back to the top of English football, they will need to target some top quality defenders this summer.
Arsenal have experimented with a variety of different players at the back this season but none seem to be sticking at the moment. Considering that in the last few months, defensive mistakes have cost them dearly, the Gunners around the bar were keen to remember the time that Sol Campbell arrived at Highbury on a free transfer from their much-hated rivals Tottenham.
That turned out to be a brilliant signing for the club and it got us thinking that Tottenham’s current defender Toby Alderwiereld would prove to be an even bigger statement if Arsenal were capable of pulling off such a signing.
It really would be a no-brainer for Arsenal and considering that Alderweireld doesn’t want to sign a new deal at Tottenham, the Gunners should lay down a big amount of money to secure a top-class defender. Given that the Belgian man is valued at £36m on Transfermarkt, his contribution on the pitch would prove to be worth a lot more than that to Arsenal.
Having managed to persuade Sol Campbell to cross the North London divide back in 2001, Arsene Wenger certainly does have previous in these kind of deals. Indeed, with the aforementioned England man proving to be one of his best ever signings, Alderwiereld would surely be an improvement on even him.
This transfer would be audacious to say the least and it wouldn’t be an easy task for Arsenal to pull off. On the other hand, the Gunners are in desperate need of top defenders and Toby Alderweireld would go a long way in helping Arsenal propel themselves up the table.
It would certainly hit the headlines.
